Whether through Shakespeare’s tragedies or Toni Morrison’s novels, literature reveals some of the most challenging and complex questions of the human experience. For centuries, the written word has played a role in documenting society's conflicts and inspiring change. The Great Gatsby captured the spirit of Fitzgerald's generation and the tension between American ideals and realities. Nineteen Eighty-Four introduced "Big Brother" into the lexicon and anticipated much of the contemporary political discourse. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah explores the search for identity and gives voice to the contemporary immigrant experience.

The literature program provides students with the analytical tools to be deep thinkers and competitive readers of the world, sharpens their empathetic reasoning, and cultivates cultural sensitivity. As an English major at Emmanuel, you will gain a broad overview of major texts and traditions in British, American and World literature. With a focus on developing cultural and rhetorical awareness, as well as public speaking, reading and writing skills, you will learn how the written word can be used as a powerful tool to affect change in your own world.

Through this interdisciplinary minor, drawing courses from English, art, modern languages and theater, you will obtain a strong foundation in communication, visual language, film analysis and film production. Film minors will learn to ethically produce and consume such texts in their professional, scholarly, and personal lives, with special attention to the ways in which stories have the potential to represent multiple perspectives and to effect social change.

In today’s fast-moving global economy, smart financial decision-making is critical, for individuals, businesses, and governments alike. As a finance major at Emmanuel, you’ll gain a deep understanding of how capital is raised, managed, and invested—and how finance shapes everything from household budgets to multinational strategy.

Our program blends theory with applied experience. You’ll study topics like portfolio management, international finance, corporate strategy, and behavioral decision-making while building quantitative skills in forecasting, modeling, and analytics.

Food Studies is a growing and inherently interdisciplinary field that examines the relationship between food and all aspects of the human experience, locally and globally, including culture and society, science, politics, history and business.

With this minor, you will be inspired to both think critically and actively engage in aspects of food production, food sustainability, and food security through integrative studies in the liberal arts, natural and physical sciences, and business and management. Through experiential learning projects, cultivate the understanding and technical skills relevant to scientific and business aspects of the food industry with consideration to the historical, political, and social constructions and inequities of the domestic and global food systems.

The chemistry major with a concentration in forensic science explores the role of science in solving crimes and supporting the justice system. You’ll learn how chemical and biological evidence is collected, analyzed and interpreted to inform investigations and protect public safety.

Through interdisciplinary coursework, you’ll study techniques such as toxicology, DNA analysis and trace evidence detection. Hands-on lab experience and case-based learning help you connect classroom theory to real-world forensic applications.

Located in Boston, Emmanuel offers access to internship opportunities with regional crime labs, medical examiners’ offices, and legal organizations. Whether you’re interested in forensic analysis, law enforcement, or health and safety fields, this concentration prepares you to apply science with purpose and precision.

How have the diverse experiences, contributions and voices of all individuals and groups—those both marginalized and empowered by gender identities, and including those who identify as women and the LGBTQ+ community—advanced the way we think about gender and inequality? Through this interdisciplinary minor, you will have the opportunity to explore gender in both historical and contemporary perspectives, the ways gender affects identities and relationships, the representation of gender in the arts and media, and the politics surrounding gender identity and construction. You will also question assumptions and challenge stereotypes on gender equity, race, ethnicity, class, ability, religious affiliation and other categories of identity.

This interdisciplinary program integrates the sciences, social sciences, and humanities to seek answers to the enormous health challenges facing the U.S. and the world. This includes how factors influencing health promotion and disease prevention intersect with the environmental, political, and social determinants of health to vulnerable populations locally and globally. The major and minor therefore cover issues of the science of disease and health as they relate to public policy, poverty, race, class, gender, ethics, peace and war, as well as mental healthcare and cultural components of addiction and how healthcare providers can best communicate with the public

Human resources professionals play a critical role in building fair, inclusive, and engaging workplaces. At Emmanuel, the human resources management minor equips you with the knowledge and skills to help organizations recruit and retain talent, shape company culture, and develop people-centered policies that align with social, legal, and economic frameworks.

You’ll explore how HR is evolving beyond compliance to focus on creating productive, energized teams and fostering environments where employees can thrive. Through courses in HR strategy, employment law, and organizational behavior, you’ll learn how to support effective hiring practices, develop compensation strategies, and navigate the dynamics of workplace culture.

As advised by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the curriculum combines a base of business courses and electives centered on communications, data analysis, and supporting diverse and inclusive work environments.

Emmanuel’s minor in industrial-organizational psychology explores how people think, act, and interact in professional settings. You will learn how psychological principles inform hiring, leadership, employee satisfaction, and workplace culture, skills that apply to human resources, business, and consulting.

Through the College's Boston location, you are well-positioned to intern with organizations and agencies that value behavioral insight and workplace strategy. The I/O psychology minor complements majors in psychology, business, sociology and more.
