If you're a retiree with a traditional IRA or similar retirement account, chances are you’re familiar with Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs).

These are the minimum amounts you must withdraw annually once you reach age 72 (or age 73 if you turned 72 after December 31, 2022). But did you know there's a way to meet your RMD requirement and make a meaningful impact at Emmanuel College?

By directing your RMD to Emmanuel as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), you can support current and future students—while also reducing your taxable income.

What Is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows individuals aged 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 each year directly from an IRA to a qualified nonprofit like Emmanuel College. Because the distribution goes straight to the College, the amount is excluded from your taxable income—even if you don’t itemize deductions.

This giving strategy can satisfy your RMD requirement and provide critical philanthropic support for Emmanuel's mission: educating students in a dynamic liberal arts and sciences learning community in the heart of Boston.

Why Make a Gift to Emmanuel Through Your RMD?

  • Maximize Your Tax Benefit: QCDs are not considered taxable income, which may help you avoid pushing your income into a higher tax bracket.
  • Make a Lasting Difference: Your gift can go toward scholarships, academic programs, campus ministry, or areas of greatest need—ensuring Emmanuel continues to offer a transformative education rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition.
  • Leave a Legacy: Many alumni choose to direct their RMDs to honor a favorite professor, support a department, or pay it forward to the next generation of Saints.

How to Make a QCD to Emmanuel

  1. Check Your Eligibility: You must be at least 70½ years old at the time of the gift.
  2. Work with Your IRA Administrator: Ask them to send the distribution directly to Emmanuel College. Gifts must go straight to the College to qualify as a QCD.
  3. Provide the Following Details:
    Legal Name: Emmanuel College
Emmanuel College Tax ID (EIN): 04-2105769
Mailing Address: Office of Development and Alumni Relations Emmanuel College
400 The Fenway Boston, MA 02115
  4. Let Us Know: Contact the Office of Development at  development [at] emmanuel.edu or 617-735-9771 to notify us of your gift—and let us thank you properly!
